Attache is a word with a French origin, meaning a person assigned, quite literally attached, to the staff of somebody higher up the pecking order in the diplomatic ranks.
While the word is synonymous with diplomatic rank, the accessories carried by an attache in a case has generically been referred to as an attache. Typically secured, capable of carrying papers, and usually framed in wood, the attache has a long history both in Europe and the United States. Today, they are less common but many prefer to continue to utilize them because they are considered a traditional briefcase or are otherwise utilized in a traditional stately manner.
