The word portfolio has many meanings and is used in many contexts. Typically a portfolio is a group of something, as in an investment portfolio, or rather a collection of sorts.  In any way, over the course of time a portfolio has generically been applied to the case that portfolios have been carried in. Hence the birth of the word portfolios!

In any event, portfolios are typically held under the arm and are useful for carrying documents, a pad, and really not much else. They are useful for taking notes and for placing into a larger item including a briefcase.
